Starfish Space prepares first Otter spacecraft launch for NASA mission
Starfish Space is preparing to launch its first full-sized Otter spacecraft, marking a transition from prototype testing to operational commercial missions. The spacecraft is scheduled to launch no earlier than October 1 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, riding as a payload on a SpaceX Transporter-18 mission.
The mission is part of a $15 million NASA contract known as the Small Spacecraft Propulsion and Inspection Capability (SSPICY). During this mission, the approximately 300-kilogram Otter vehicle will demonstrate its ability to approach and inspect defunct or inoperable satellites. It will collect critical data, such as spin rates and surface conditions, to test technologies intended for future satellite servicing, docking, and debris removal.
Starfish Space, which has raised approximately $150 million to date, has previously conducted successful demonstrations using its smaller Otter Pup prototypes. The company’s long-term goal includes using water propellant to extend the life of spacecraft and providing services to maintain or deorbit satellites to manage space debris.
