Stargazing events and dark sky advocacy initiatives launched in US regions
Various regional organizations are hosting events to promote stargazing and raise awareness about the importance of dark skies.
In Maine, the Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument will host its annual stargazing event on October 3, 2026. The monument, which covers over 87,000 acres, is recognized for its minimal light pollution. The scheduled activities include artistic performances, expert talks, and family-oriented programming.
In the Twin Ports region, the organization Starry Skies North has launched ‘Celebrate the Night Week.’ The initiative aims to connect the community with the night sky and advocate for reduced light pollution in Duluth, similar to models used in Flagstaff, Arizona. The week-long schedule includes author talks, star parties with telescopes, planetarium shows, and educational sessions regarding how aquatic life depends on natural darkness.
