Starknet community approves research into independent Layer 1 blockchain

The Starknet community has overwhelmingly supported a proposal to research transitioning the network into an independent, post-quantum Layer 1 blockchain. A governance poll concluded with 93.52% of voting power in favor of the research initiative, based on approximately 3,200 votes.

The vote authorizes StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation to investigate the technical requirements and costs of becoming an independent blockchain. This move is driven by the desire to achieve quantum-resistant security by 2027, whereas Ethereum’s target for similar base-layer protections is December 2029. While Starknet utilizes hash-based STARK proofs that are inherently resistant to quantum computing, it currently remains dependent on Ethereum for data availability and bridge messaging.

Crucially, the vote does not mandate a departure from Ethereum. Starknet will continue to operate as an Ethereum Layer 2 for the time being, and any actual transition to a Layer 1 would require a separate, binding governance vote. The proposal also ensures that the STRK token remains unchanged and that bridges between Ethereum and Starknet stay operational during the research phase.
