Starknet considers transition to Layer 1 to address quantum threats

Starknet is evaluating a strategic shift from its current role as an Ethereum Layer 2 solution to becoming an independent Layer 1 blockchain. The primary driver for this potential transition is the need to implement quantum-resistant cryptography to defend against future threats posed by quantum computing.

By moving to a Layer 1 model, Starknet would gain full control over its cryptographic evolution, potentially targeting a transition by 2027. This shift would require the project to establish its own consensus mechanism and validator network, moving away from the security provided by the Ethereum settlement layer. While this offers sovereignty and long-term security advantages, it also introduces risks by decoupling from Ethereum’s established security and shared liquidity.

In related technical developments, StarkWare has deployed the v0.14.4 mainnet upgrade, which increases the processing limit for single-proof transactions to 1.1 billion L2 gas, enhancing network throughput and supporting more complex applications.
