Starknet launches vote on potential transition to independent Layer 1
Starknet has launched a seven-day, non-binding governance vote to determine whether the network should explore transitioning from an Ethereum Layer 2 to an independent, post-quantum Layer 1 blockchain. The proposal, which opened on October 15 and is scheduled to close on October 22, asks STRK holders if researchers should study the technical and governance requirements for such a migration.
The primary driver for this potential shift is quantum security. While Starknet’s proof system uses hash-based cryptography, its current reliance on Ethereum for data availability and bridge communication leaves it vulnerable to future quantum computing threats. StarkWare, the company behind Starknet, has expressed a goal of achieving a fully quantum-resistant network by 2027.
A “yes” vote would not trigger an immediate migration but would instead authorize further research and subsequent governance proposals. Even if a transition is pursued, the STRK token would remain the network’s native asset, and bridges to Ethereum would remain operational. The move highlights a strategic choice between moving at Ethereum’s pace for security upgrades or taking independent control of consensus and data availability to mitigate quantum risks earlier.
