Starlink and SpaceX expand satellite presence amid growing orbital density

The number of active satellites in Earth's orbit has grown significantly, reaching between 15,000 and 18,500 as of August 2026. SpaceX's Starlink constellation dominates this sector, with approximately 10,900 active units currently in orbit.

While these satellite networks provide essential services such as global internet connectivity, navigation, and Earth observation, they present new challenges. The increasing density of satellites contributes to light pollution, which can interfere with astronomical observations by creating bright streaks in telescope images. There are also concerns regarding the impact on human circadian rhythms and the disruption of migratory patterns for animals.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, SpaceX has registered a legal entity, signaling the imminent arrival of Starlink services. Residents can now place orders for equipment and join a waiting list via the company's website, offering high-speed internet access to those in remote or inaccessible areas without the need for traditional cable or fiber infrastructure.
