Starlink and Vivo partner for satellite-to-cell technology in Brazil

Starlink and the Brazilian telecommunications company Vivo are collaborating on Direct-to-Cell (D2D) technology, which aims to connect smartphones directly to satellites without the need for external antennas. Anatel has authorized this partnership in Brazil with a validity period extending until April 22, 2029. While the service is expected to launch for customers starting in 2027, it will initially focus on providing messaging, emergency communications, and basic data services.

Currently, Starlink users in Brazil access the service via Wi-Fi networks generated by installed satellite antennas. The D2D technology, however, is being tested to eliminate the requirement for specialized hardware. Compatibility for this future service will depend on specific device models, software, and regulatory frameworks. Recent international compatibility lists suggest that various devices from manufacturers such as Samsung, Apple, and Motorola may support these direct satellite connections.
