Starlink antennas near Sofia targeted in suspected arson attack

Bulgarian authorities are investigating an arson attack on a satellite communications facility near Sofia. According to opposition MP Ivaylo Mirchev, two masked individuals intentionally set fire to 11 of the 17 Starlink antennas at the site. The facility provides critical connectivity used by the Ukrainian military.

Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirmed the incident in parliament but declined to provide specific details, citing the ongoing intensive investigation. He requested that the State Agency for National Security (DANS) refrain from premature disclosures to avoid compromising the case. Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev announced increased security measures for similar infrastructure across the country.

Plamen Tonchev, head of DANS, warned of the potential for further sabotage and noted that a partially removed fence may have facilitated access to the site. While opposition members have suggested the attack is a Russian hybrid warfare operation, similar incidents have occurred in Poland. Bulgarian media reported that two suspects, aged 20 and 21, holding German passports, were detained in connection with the investigation.
