Starlink constellation exceeds 11,000 satellites in orbit

SpaceX’s Starlink constellation has surpassed 11,000 satellites in orbit following the Group 17-50 mission on August 19, 2026. As of late August, the total number of Starlink satellites launched stands at approximately 12,769, with 11,003 currently in orbit and 10,987 actively working.

Despite the growth, SpaceX recently experienced a mission scrub at Cape Canaveral on August 20 when an abort was triggered just 30 seconds before launch. Looking ahead, Elon Musk indicated that SpaceX intends to attempt a Starship upper-stage tower catch within a few months and is targeting the first Starship vehicle reflight by late 2026 or early 2027.

Concerns regarding orbital management persist. An analysis of a proposed million-satellite AI data center constellation suggests a potential for significant orbital e-waste, with an estimated 200,000 GPU-laden satellites potentially cycling out of service annually. Additionally, space safety tracking shows several Starlink-involved conjunctions, though none are currently classified as high-risk.
