Poland protests SpaceX decision to exclude Starlink from European roaming region

SpaceX has implemented new regional service policies for its Starlink Roam satellite internet service, effectively excluding Poland from its unified European roaming region. While over 30 European countries are grouped together—allowing users to travel between them without additional fees or restrictions—accounts registered in Poland are now treated as domestic-only.

This change, set to impact existing customers by August 17, imposes significant hurdles for Polish users traveling abroad. Those on standard roaming plans will face a 30-day limit before needing to return to Poland to reset their location or upgrade to a much more expensive 'Unlimited' tier. Additionally, users may be required to undergo identity verification and report international travel.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from the Polish government. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski demanded that SpaceX restore equal treatment for Polish citizens, stating, “Poland is not a second-class market, and Polish customers are not second-class customers.” Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also addressed Elon Musk directly, suggesting that Poland might reconsider its annual payments for services if discriminatory practices continue.

Analysts suggest the move could impact logistics companies and professional drivers who rely on continuous connectivity. Some observers also link the tension to Poland's significant financial support for Starlink terminals used by Ukraine.
