Starlink expands high-speed satellite internet to airline fleets
Starlink is significantly expanding its aviation footprint through major partnerships with United Airlines and EasyJet.
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby announced that the carrier is accelerating its installation pace to approximately three aircraft per day. The airline currently has Starlink service on 661 jets, covering 48% of its flights, and aims for full-fleet coverage by the end of 2027. Kirby noted that passenger demand, specifically the desire for high-speed connectivity over traditional slow Wi-Fi, prompted the airline to increase its target from 65% to 100% of its fleet. Los Angeles is expected to become the first United hub with universal Starlink coverage in early 2027.
EasyJet has also reached an agreement to introduce onboard internet, with installations scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027 and completion expected by early 2028. The rollout will target Airbus A320, A320neo, and A321neo aircraft. The service will allow passengers to stream entertainment, play games, and access digital services such as food and drink ordering. While the financial terms of the EasyJet deal were not disclosed, the technology will utilize Starlink’s electronically steered antennas to maintain connectivity with satellites while in flight.
