Starlink fined by German consumer watchdog for illegal price hike and unauthorized tariff upgrades

Germany's consumer protection agency, the Verbraucherzentrale Niedersachsen, issued a formal cease‑and‑desist order against satellite internet provider Starlink. The regulator alleges that Starlink raised the monthly fee for its standard 200 Mbit/s household plan from €50 to €55, citing higher operating costs and network expansion, while the contract clause describing price adjustments is insufficiently clear.

In addition, the watchdog claims the company automatically transferred several customers to the higher‑priced "Privathaushalt Max" plan without explicit consent, increasing their monthly charge to €75 – a €25 rise beyond the announced €5 increase. Both practices are deemed illegal under German law. Consumers are advised to review their bills, contest unauthorized upgrades, and request refunds where applicable.
