Starlink introduces community internet sharing and orbital data center plans
Starlink is introducing a new service called 'Starlink Community,' which allows individuals and businesses to monetize their satellite internet connections by sharing them with nearby neighbors. Under this model, hosts manage the physical installation and maintenance of the equipment, while Starlink handles all billing and financial processing. In exchange for providing the infrastructure, hosts receive commissions based on the number of connections generated. The service is designed for residential buildings, commercial spaces, and public areas, offering end users various temporary access passes ranging from hourly to monthly.
Separately, SpaceX is advancing plans for 'Starmind,' an orbital data center project. According to SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen, the company aims to launch the first dedicated satellites for this infrastructure by 2027. The ambitious project could eventually involve a constellation of up to one million satellites to scale computing capacity beyond traditional terrestrial data centers. The satellites, such as the AI1 model, are being designed to handle significant power loads and will be manufactured at the Gigasat facility in Bastrop, Texas.
