Starlink launch in India delayed amid Musk-Ambani dispute

Elon Musk has intensified a public dispute with the Indian government and domestic business leaders regarding the delayed launch of Starlink’s satellite internet services in India. Musk accused unnamed “oligarchs” of maintaining a “monopolistic chokehold” on the Indian market to prevent competition, even suggesting that billionaire Mukesh Ambani, owner of Reliance Jio, wields undue influence over the regulatory process.

The Indian Ministry of Communications has rejected these allegations, describing them as “baseless and misconceived.” Officials stated that the regulatory framework for satellite communications is fair and non-discriminatory. The government clarified that Starlink, Reliance Jio’s satellite venture, and Eutelsat OneWeb are all at broadly the same regulatory stage, currently undergoing mandatory security assessments that must be completed before spectrum can be allocated.

While Starlink has secured an initial license and has spent years working toward compliance, it still awaits final security clearances and spectrum assignment. The dispute also touched on security concerns, with Musk refuting claims that Starlink had been used by militants in regions like Manipur, noting that satellite beams are currently turned off over India. Additionally, the Ministry noted that Amazon is also seeking to enter the Indian satellite internet market.
