Starlink provides up to 20 Gbps internet in Alaska’s Utqiagvik

SpaceX’s Starlink satellite service has begun offering symmetric speeds of 10 Gbps, with bonded gateways reaching up to 20 Gbps, to Utqiagvik, Alaska – the northernmost community in the United States. The rollout was completed with local provider OptimERA xG, ending a long period of limited broadband in the Arctic‑circle town.

Globally, Starlink operates about 10,400 active low‑orbit satellites, serves more than 10 million users across 150+ countries and regions, and delivers typical download speeds of 45‑280 Mbps with latency of 25‑60 ms. In Taiwan, commercial service remains blocked because the country's telecommunications law restricts foreign ownership; Starlink’s insistence on 100 % foreign‑owned operation conflicts with the 49 % cap, so regulatory approval has not been granted. The article also notes that heavy rain and strong winds can degrade performance, although the hardware is rated for winds up to 96 km/h.
