Starlink satellite network gains strategic influence in conflict zones

Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network has become a critical communication tool in conflict zones and isolated regions. The constellation, consisting of nearly 10,000 small satellites in low Earth orbit, provides low-latency internet connectivity used by hospitals, emergency teams, humanitarian organizations, and military forces.

In Ukraine, Starlink has been integrated into the national communication infrastructure since the 2022 Russian invasion, enabling military coordination, drone operations, and the maintenance of essential services like energy and railways. However, the technology faces challenges regarding illegal access; Ukrainian authorities are working with SpaceX to prevent Russian forces from obtaining terminals through smuggling via intermediary countries. Similar issues have been reported in Sudan, where terminals have entered the country through illegal markets and are being used by the Rapid Support Forces.
