Starlink satellites used for internet and atmospheric monitoring
Starlink, the largest satellite internet provider operated by SpaceX, currently has an estimated 11,135 satellites in orbit. While approximately 12,962 satellites have been launched since the program began in 2019, the total number in orbit is lower due to satellites that have deorbited, failed, or served as prototypes.
Beyond internet services, Starlink's orbital data is being utilized for scientific research. Astronomer Tony Phillips has developed a “planetary barometer” that uses the drag experienced by these satellites to measure changes in Earth’s upper atmosphere. By analyzing how much altitude a satellite would lose daily without thruster corrections, Phillips can track atmospheric density changes caused by solar energy. This method is cross-referenced with data from other networks, including Amazon’s Kuiper and Planet Labs, to provide a daily index of atmospheric conditions.
