Starlink service suspension in Senegal faces opposition from consumer group
The Front against the High Cost of Connection (F4C), a digital consumer advocacy group, has expressed strong opposition to the provisional suspension of Starlink’s service license in Senegal. The group warns that the suspension of the SpaceX-operated satellite internet service could severely impact users in rural areas where terrestrial network coverage is insufficient.
According to the F4C, Starlink serves as a critical alternative to traditional operators, particularly in regions such as Kédougou, Tambacounda, and Matam. The service is used by rural schools, health centers, farmers, and small businesses to bridge the digital divide. The collective argues that depriving these users of connectivity will exacerbate existing inequalities.
While the F4C acknowledges the authority of the Telecommunications and Postal Regulatory Agency (ARTP) to enforce licensing frameworks, it calls for a proportional response that prioritizes the interests of citizens and economic activities. The group emphasizes that reliable and affordable internet access is essential for development and should not be treated as a privilege.
