Starlink to build first Central American ground station in Honduras
The National Telecommunications Commission (CONATEL) has authorized Starlink to install its first ground station in Central America, located in the city of Choluteca, Honduras. The project involves an initial investment of approximately 10 million dollars.
The new infrastructure is designed to improve satellite internet speeds and reduce latency by allowing connections to be managed directly within the country. According to CONATEL Commissioner Fernando Anduray, this will reduce dependence on infrastructure located in other territories, such as China and the United States, to cover the national territory.
The project is expected to benefit roughly 172,000 people, particularly in rural and remote areas where traditional networks are limited. Beyond connectivity, the operation is projected to generate an annual economic contribution of approximately 17 million lempiras and is viewed as a move to strengthen foreign investment confidence in Honduras.
