Starmus VIII festival begins in Tenerife with focus on science and unity

The eighth edition of the Starmus festival has commenced in Tenerife, Spain, under the theme ‘In search of truth’. The global event brings together scientists, astronauts, and musicians to discuss Earth sciences, artificial intelligence, and their societal consequences.

A highlight of the opening ceremonies was the 10th anniversary of the Stephen Hawking Medal. Recipients include physicist Brian Cox, filmmaker Ridley Scott, and the crew of the Artemis II lunar mission. The Artemis II crew—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Jeremy Hansen—shared reflections on viewing Earth from the Moon, emphasizing a need for global unity, peace, and positivity.

Additionally, the festival introduced the Jane Goodall Earth Medal, awarded to Christiana Figueres for her role in the Paris Agreement. The event, organized by astrophysicist Garik Israelian, features musical performances by figures such as Brian May, Andrea Bocelli, and Sarah Brightman.
