Startup ecosystems grow in Valencia and Catalonia despite funding challenges
The startup ecosystems in Valencia and Catalonia are experiencing significant growth, though they face different structural dynamics. In Valencia, the number of active startups has surpassed 1,700, with the ecosystem employing approximately 23,250 people. While the region has attracted 234 million euros in investment so far this year, a lack of local capital for larger funding rounds remains a primary challenge. This shortage often forces high-potential projects to relocate to hubs like Madrid, Barcelona, London, or Berlin to secure necessary scale.
In Catalonia, the ICT sector has become a major economic driver, representing 9.1% of the regional GDP. The sector includes 19,448 companies and employs over 140,000 people. Data indicates that the ICT sector's gross value added reached a historic high of 11,112 million euros in 2025. The region currently hosts 2,403 startups, benefiting from high productivity and an expanding market driven by advancements in artificial intelligence.
