Startup Portugal targets 5% GDP contribution and eight new unicorns

Startup Portugal is marking its 10th anniversary with a strategic goal to significantly expand the nation's entrepreneurial impact. Miguel Aguiar, CEO of Startup Portugal, stated that the organization aims to have startups contribute 5% to Portugal's GDP within the next decade.

Currently, the country hosts 5,091 active startups that generate 2,856 million euros in revenue, accounting for approximately 1% of the national GDP. These companies have created over 28,000 jobs, with average salaries 81% higher than the national average. The sector has also demonstrated strong international presence, with exports totaling 1,571 million euros.

Looking ahead, Aguiar intends to double the number of Portuguese-born unicorns, targeting at least eight new ones to join existing companies like Farfetch, OutSystems, and Feedzai. The strategic focus for the next ten years will shift from merely fostering new businesses to scaling existing ones, improving access to financing, and driving internationalization, particularly in the growing deep tech sector.
