State Bank of Pakistan’s policy shift lifts banks and adds Rs 2.8 trn liquidity
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) removed the Minimum Deposit Rate requirement for trusts, private limited businesses and individual deposits above Rs 10 million. Analysts expect the change to benefit major banks such as Habib Bank Ltd, United Bank Ltd, Meezan Bank, Bank AL Habib and MCB Bank, potentially boosting sector profitability by Rs 20‑45 billion annually, especially for those with large high‑net‑worth customer bases.
On July 10, 2026, the SBP injected Rs 2.77 trillion into the market through reverse‑repo purchases and sharia‑compliant Mudarabah open‑market operations. The operations accepted bids for 7‑day and 14‑day tenors at rates around 11.5%, aiming to maintain liquidity and stabilize short‑term funding conditions.
