State Court of Audit urges police fees for high-risk football matches

The State Court of Audit (LRH) is calling for the implementation of a fee system to charge professional football clubs for police deployments during high-risk matches. LRH President Brigitte Mandt stated that a fee structure should be established promptly, noting that the potential revenue could reach millions of euros.

Mandt argued that higher police costs would provide economic incentives for clubs to reduce the scale of police presence by investing in their own security measures, such as increased private personnel and improved access controls. For the 2024/25 season in North Rhine-Westphalia, authorities identified 51 high-risk matches and 78 risk matches, representing potential billable costs of approximately 15 million euros.

During the 2024/2025 season, the North Rhine-Westphalia police conducted nearly 700 deployments for football matches, totaling 708,000 personnel hours. However, Interior Minister Herbert Reul has expressed opposition to the idea, maintaining that law and order is a sovereign state responsibility that should not involve billing clubs.
