State Department officials face allegations of illegal political vetting

The U.S. State Department is facing allegations that it has implemented illegal political vetting processes for career diplomats seeking promotion. Reports indicate that officials have asked candidates for mid-to-upper level foreign service roles whether they voted for Donald Trump in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 presidential elections.

According to sources, top officials allegedly made it clear that eligibility for certain roles would be restricted to those who voted for Donald Trump. Furthermore, candidates were reportedly told that their campaign donation history would be scrutinized, with any donations to Democratic candidates serving as a disqualifying factor.

Former Representative Tom Malinowski stated that these actions violate the Hatch Act, noting that those involved could face investigation by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, fines, or termination. Senator Jeanne Shaheen of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmed that the committee is working with the House to investigate these claims, emphasizing that critical national security positions should be filled based on experience rather than political loyalty.
