State Legislatures Tackle SNAP Reforms in Colorado and Alabama

Colorado lawmakers closed the 2026 session facing a budget deficit of over $1 billion. They used voter‑approved funds from Propositions LL and MM to fully implement the Healthy School Meals for All program and to keep SNAP benefits strong, directing remaining funds to SNAP administration, outreach and future cost‑share requirements.

In Alabama, House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter outlined priorities for the 2027 session, focusing on reducing the state’s near‑10% SNAP payment error rate that could trigger a $200 million federal repayment. He suggested artificial‑intelligence tools to improve accuracy and also highlighted plans to revisit gambling regulation and address prison‑related public‑safety measures.
