State of Mexico leads Mexico in cardiovascular deaths, 80% preventable

The State of Mexico recorded the highest number of cardiovascular disease deaths in the country, with more than 40 fatalities per day. Official data show 12,249 deaths in 2024, a figure that preliminary 2025 statistics suggest is continuing to rise.

Deputy and surgeon Jennifer González López, president of the state health commission, warned that cardiovascular disease is Mexico's biggest public‑health challenge, accounting for about three of every ten national deaths (around 200,000 annually). She cited World Health Organization estimates that over 80 % of premature cardiovascular deaths could be avoided through early risk‑factor detection and healthier lifestyles. Contributing factors include obesity, overweight, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, chronic kidney disease, smoking and vaping, as well as sedentary habits and poor diet.
