State of Mexico opens 2027 independent candidacy process
The Electoral Institute of the State of Mexico (IEEM) has officially opened the call for independent candidacies for the 2027 electoral process. This process aims to renew the local Congress and the 125 municipalities within the state.
Interested citizens must submit a Written Manifestation of Intent (EMI). The deadline for deputy candidates is December 20, 2026, while those seeking municipal presidencies have until January 4, 2027. Once approved, candidates must secure the support of at least 3% of the nominal electoral list in their respective district or municipality.
IEEM President Amalia Pulido Gómez noted significant challenges facing this route, reporting an 80% decline in interest for independent candidacies between the 2018 and 2024 election cycles. Furthermore, she highlighted that no independent candidate has successfully won an election in the state to date.
