State of Mexico prepares for 2027 elections amid violence and AI risks
Ahead of the 2027 elections in the State of Mexico, authorities are facing dual challenges regarding physical violence and digital disinformation. During the 2024 electoral cycle, at least 32 violent incidents were documented against candidates, including 14 threats, 13 attacks, and five instances of unlawful detention.
In addition to physical security concerns, the rise of artificial intelligence—specifically manipulated images, fake audio, and deepfakes—presents a new risk to the integrity of the upcoming vote. The Institute of Electoral Matters (IEEM) plans to utilize previous protocols to channel security requests and coordinate risk assessments with responsible institutions to protect the more than 13 million voters expected to participate.
