State of Mexico ramps up flood prevention and water‑level recovery efforts

The State of Mexico’s water authority (CAEM) has removed 369 tons of waste from drainage networks, cleared 155 km of canals and restored 53 wells and 294 septic tanks across 52 municipalities to keep water flowing and reduce flood risk during the rainy season. The operation, begun on 15 May, is part of a permanent strategy to protect the population and preserve hydraulic infrastructure.

Hydrological data released at the end of June showed reservoir storage at about 68 % of capacity, with the Cutzamala system reaching 69 %. Experts warn that, despite the improvement following the severe 2024 drought, the state still lacks comprehensive preventive actions such as rain‑water capture, leak detection and pipe maintenance. They urge permanent policies and public campaigns to conserve water and avoid a repeat of the earlier crisis.
