Omar García Harfuch reports homicide decrease in congressional testimony
Omar García Harfuch, Mexico's Secretary of Security and Protection of Citizens, recently appeared before the Political Coordination Board (JUCOPO) in a closed-door session at the Chamber of Deputies. The private meeting was held to discuss sensitive national security matters as part of the accountability process for President Claudia Sheinbaum's second government report.
During his testimony, García Harfuch reported a 53 percent decrease in the daily average of intentional homicides, which fell from 86 to 40 cases in August 2026. He also addressed efforts to identify 'red zones' to prevent organized crime from interfering in the 2027 elections.
Responding to political speculation from Senator Manuel Velasco regarding a potential 2030 presidential candidacy, García Harfuch stated that focusing on such an agenda would be a 'lack of respect' to victims and his colleagues. President Sheinbaum dismissed the speculation as 'mucho grilla' (political noise), emphasizing that the administration remains focused on current security duties.
