State of Mexico stops 15 million pesos in extortion payments

Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez said that during the week of 25 June to 1 July, the State of Mexico’s Mesa de Paz and the Cyber Police prevented criminals from receiving 92 % of the money they sought through extortion, equivalent to roughly 15.4 million pesos. The effort was coordinated with the state’s security secretariat and involved the 089 hotline, which allows anonymous, 24‑hour reporting.

Authorities recorded 802 citizen complaints in that period, most of them concerning telephone extortion, phone fraud and malicious calls, as well as threats and impersonation attempts. Participants in the Mesa de Paz included the Secretary of Government Horacio Duarte Olivares, the Secretary of Security Cristóbal Castañeda Camarillo, the State Attorney General José Luis Cervantes Martínez, and representatives from the defence, navy, National Guard and national intelligence agencies.
