State Takes Control of Brazil's Segunda Ponte, Starts Fifth‑Lane Project

The Espírito Santo state government has assumed responsibility for the Segunda Ponte, a key connector between Vitória, Vila Velha and Cariacica, after an agreement with the federal Department of National Infrastructure of Transportation (DNIT). State agencies now handle traffic enforcement, accident response and other duties on the bridge segment between km 0 and 1.30 of BR‑262.

Works to add a fifth lane began on Friday, with the first phase carried out on the lower structure without closing the roadway. The project, overseen by the state’s Secretariat of Mobility and Infrastructure (Semobi), aims to increase bridge capacity by up to 33 % and is scheduled to be completed by December. Night‑time construction will run from 21:00 to 05:00, and drivers are advised to use the nearby Florentino Avidos bridge as an alternate route. The investment is estimated at R$ 15 million.
