Staten Island church spared from four-alarm fire

More than 200 firefighters battled a four-alarm fire on Saturday evening at the Mount Loretto grounds in Staten Island. The blaze originated in a warehouse that had been vacant for five years, causing catastrophic damage and a roof collapse.

High winds and flying embers complicated containment efforts, but crews successfully prevented the flames from spreading to nearby structures, including two schools and a senior center. Among the spared buildings was the historic Old Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne, which gained cinematic fame for being featured in the baptism scene of the film ‘The Godfather’.

The fire was brought under control by 8:30 p.m., though crews continued to manage hot spots. One firefighter sustained a minor burn to his leg. The Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
