Staten Island man survives direct lightning strike

Thomas Fahmy, a 24-year-old congressional staffer for U.S. Representative Nicole Malliotakis, survived a direct lightning strike on Staten Island, New York. The incident occurred on August 27 while Fahmy was walking toward his vehicle during a storm, carrying an umbrella.

A neighbor’s doorbell camera captured the moment the lightning struck, causing Fahmy to collapse onto the sidewalk. Despite the impact, Fahmy remained conscious and was able to stand up and seek help from a nearby resident, Stephanie Homan, who called 911.

Fahmy was transported to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital for observation. Medical examinations revealed no visible burns or serious physical injuries, though he reported intense sensations of tingling, numbness, and burning pain, particularly in his feet. He was discharged the following day.

Fahmy expressed profound gratitude for his survival, describing the experience as a reminder of the preciousness of life. Following his recovery, he attended church to give thanks.
