Statens Naturhistoriske Museum launches spider research project
The Statens Naturhistoriske Museum has launched ‘Eddercup’en’, a citizen science project designed to gather new data on Denmark’s spider populations. By involving volunteers in collecting specimens from forest floors, researchers aim to expand their knowledge of the approximately 610 spider species found in the country, particularly the smaller species that are often overlooked.
Participants collect fallen leaves from forest floors and spread them out to search for hidden spiders. The collected specimens are then sent to the Natural History Museum, where arachnologists, such as Frederik Lech Fischer, will conduct further research, including DNA analysis. One specific event organized by OutdoorHimmerland is scheduled for October 11, 2026, at Rebild Nationalpark, where participants can assist in the fieldwork.
Researchers note that a lack of specialized arachnologists has limited previous study of these species. This initiative seeks to use public participation to rapidly increase scientific understanding of spider habitats and biodiversity.
