Statens vegvesen considers speed limit cuts for cyclist safety
Statens vegvesen is considering immediate measures to improve safety for cyclists following the deaths of ten cyclists so far this year. Road Director Ingrid Dahl Hovland has proposed reducing speed limits from 80 km/h to 60 km/h on popular training routes to address safety concerns. Hovland has called for a national effort to improve cycling safety, noting that while regulation is important, motorists must show consideration and cyclists must act predictably.
Separately, the agency is issuing warnings for the upcoming autumn holiday season. Division Director Nils Karbø has advised motorists to prepare for unpredictable weather, night frost, and slippery roads, particularly in mountain areas. Travelers are encouraged to check weather and traffic reports, consider switching to winter tires, and plan for extra travel time to avoid accidents caused by stress or fatigue.
