Statins linked to lower dementia risk in diabetes patients

A large Danish study published in The Lancet Regional Health suggests that early statin use is associated with a reduced risk of dementia in individuals newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Researchers analyzed national health-register data from 132,585 people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2006 and 2019. The findings indicate that patients who began statin treatment within one year of their diabetes diagnosis had a 15% lower relative risk of dementia after 10 years compared to those who did not receive statins. Those who started treatment between one and five years after diagnosis showed a 10% lower relative risk.

Dr. Tummas Ternhamar of Copenhagen University Hospital noted that while statins are commonly prescribed to lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and prevent cardiovascular disease, they may also offer protective effects against cognitive decline. The study highlights an association rather than direct causation, and researchers emphasize that managing cholesterol from midlife is a key modifiable risk factor for dementia.
