Statins may reduce dementia risk in type 2 diabetes patients

New research suggests that early use of statins may be linked to a 15% reduction in dementia risk among individuals with type 2 diabetes. The study, presented at ESC Congress 2026 and published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, utilized Danish national health registers to track 132,585 people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2006 and 2019.

The findings indicate that the protective effect against dementia was most significant when statin treatment began shortly after a diabetes diagnosis. While statins are primarily prescribed to lower LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, researchers are investigating whether protecting blood vessels also provides cognitive benefits.

Researchers noted that because this was an observational study, a direct causal link cannot be proven. Potential confounding factors include the “healthy-user effect,” where patients on preventive medication may engage in other healthy behaviors, and the fact that statin users in the study were younger on average.
