Statistical Institute of Belize emphasizes data role in national development

The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) recently concluded Statistics Week 2026, an event held to mark Caribbean Statistics Day under the theme ‘Harmonizing Data, Strengthening Resilience.’ The week included a public exhibition at the University of Belize and a Data Users Conference in Belize City, aimed at fostering collaboration between data producers, users, and development partners.

Director General Diana Castillo emphasized that the SIB serves a dual role as both a producer of key national statistics—such as GDP, inflation, and poverty rates—and as a coordinator for the National Statistical System (NSS). The institute works to set national standards, harmonize methods across government agencies, and build capacity to ensure data quality.

According to Castillo, these efforts are essential for evidence-based planning and decision-making regarding national priorities, including healthcare, infrastructure, education, and climate resilience. The SIB’s coordination helps ensure that the data used to guide governance and development remains reliable and consistent across the country.
