Statkraft starts substation build for Mossy Hill wind farm in Shetland

Statkraft has begun preparatory work on a new substation at Mossy Hill near Lerwick, marking a key milestone for the planned wind farm in the Shetland Islands. The substation will connect eight 145‑metre turbines to the existing underground Kergord‑Gremista cable network operated by SSEN Transmission, enabling the project to move forward.

Construction of the turbines is scheduled to start later in 2026, with the wind farm expected to be generating power by the summer of 2029. The original consent approved in 2019 covered 12 turbines and a 48 MW capacity; the plan was later revised to eight turbines, reducing the community benefit payment to £5,000 per installed megawatt per year. Statkraft’s construction manager Shane Donohoe said, “It is a key milestone towards the delivery of the consented Mossy Hill wind farm, which is expected to see construction work begin on site later in 2026.”

The project will involve about 30 abnormal‑load convoys and the creation of two new access tracks to transport components. Statkraft is also pursuing two additional wind farms on Yell (Beaw Field and Energy Isles) and plans for green ammonia and hydrogen facilities nearby.
