Statkraft to modernize Vikfalli hydropower complex in Norway

Statkraft will invest approximately NOK 460 million to modernize the control systems and electrical infrastructure of the Vikfalli hydropower complex in Norway. The project involves the Målset, Refsdal, and Hove power plants located in Vik municipality.

ABB has been selected to supply the new control systems, which will include the ABB Ability System 800xA distributed control system and UNITROL 8000 excitation systems. The upgrades aim to improve operational reliability, remote control, and cybersecurity while ensuring the plants can meet evolving grid codes.

The three power plants collectively produce between 830 and 860 GWh annually, providing enough electricity to power approximately 50,000 to 53,000 Norwegian households. The modernization is intended to extend the life of these essential assets and support the stability of the regional power system.
