SteamBoy: Modder shrinks Valve Steam Deck into Game Boy-style handheld
A hardware enthusiast known as PhyFawkes has developed a custom handheld device called the ‘SteamBoy,’ which integrates the internal components of a Valve Steam Deck into a compact, Game Boy-style chassis.
The project utilizes a 3D-printed PETG shell that is less than half the size of the original Steam Deck. The modder successfully incorporated the Steam Deck’s motherboard, battery, speakers, and even one of the trackpads into the new frame. To manage heat in the smaller enclosure, the device uses a custom 3D-printed heatsink and a 30 x 7 mm fan.
While the device is functional when connected to an external monitor or television, the integrated display remains a work in progress. PhyFawkes is currently working to connect a 1200 x 1080 resolution, 90 Hz AMOLED panel, which will require a custom adapter board and BIOS modifications to interface with the Steam Deck motherboard.
