STEAM education aims to foster human abilities in the AI era
STEAM education, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, is being emphasized as a vital pedagogical approach to develop human capabilities that artificial intelligence cannot easily replicate, such as empathy, judgment, creativity, and hope.
The concept evolved from STEM, which focuses on science and engineering. The addition of ‘Arts’ (A) serves different strategic purposes depending on the interpretation: some view it as the integration of liberal arts to provide context to technical studies, while others see it as a tool for fostering innovation through design and creativity.
In Japan, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is driving this shift through the ‘N-E.X.T. High School Concept’ announced in February 2026. This initiative aims to move away from rigid divisions between academic and technical tracks, targeting a goal where 100% of general high schools engage in cross-disciplinary learning by 2040 to prepare students for an uncertain future.
