Steam game Jono allows only one player worldwide at a time
Jono, a free 2D platformer released on Steam, features a unique concept where only one person in the world can control the character at any given moment. Built using the Godot engine, the game functions as a 'massively singleplayer' experience where players take turns for exactly 60 seconds before control is passed to the next person in a global queue.
Progress is shared across the entire community, as each player picks up exactly where the previous one left off. The collective goal is for the community to complete one million levels. While waiting in line, other participants can watch the gameplay, communicate via a shared chat, and use emotes to encourage the active player.
To manage the technical requirements of a global audience, the game does not stream video. Instead, it transmits only the control commands of the active player, allowing the spectators' own computers to render the character's movements locally. Developer Tuomas Erikoinen has reported significant interest in the project, noting thousands of players joining the experience.
