SteamBoy: Modder integrates Steam Deck hardware into Game Boy shell

A hardware modder known as PhyFawkes has developed the ‘SteamBoy’, a custom handheld device that integrates the internal components of a Valve Steam Deck into a shell styled after a classic Game Boy.

The project utilizes the original Steam Deck motherboard, battery, speakers, and controller boards. To manage the high-density hardware within the compact 32mm thick enclosure, the builder implemented a custom 3D-printed fan and heatsink assembly. To prevent thermal throttling, a -50mV undervolt was applied to both the CPU and GPU.

The device currently faces technical challenges regarding display integration. It utilizes a 1200x1080 VR AMOLED screen that requires a custom adapter printed circuit board (PCB) to interface with the Steam Deck motherboard. While the screen is not yet fully functional due to firmware requirements, the device has been demonstrated working via an external monitor. The creator intends to share details on how to replicate the 3D-printed case for other enthusiasts.
