SteamOS shows growing viability against Windows for PC gaming

The landscape of PC gaming is seeing a shift as SteamOS and the Linux ecosystem gain traction against the long-standing dominance of Windows 11. While Windows remains the standard for competitive multiplayer titles that rely on specific anti-cheat technologies—such as Valorant, Fortnite, and League of Legends—SteamOS offers a compelling alternative for single-player, indie, and cooperative gamers.

SteamOS provides advantages in system resource management, offering a lighter environment with fewer background processes, which can lead to more consistent performance stability. Through Valve's Proton technology, the system has achieved significant compatibility for running Windows-based games on Linux.

Recent experiments have demonstrated the potential of SteamOS beyond Valve's own hardware. Testing on an Asus TUF Gaming A14 laptop equipped with AMD Strix Halo hardware (specifically the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 392 APU) showed successful installation and robust performance. The system demonstrated full compatibility with hardware components like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB ports, delivering a fluid gaming experience in various AAA and indie titles comparable to console performance.
