Steel industry faces shifting shipments and export trends in North America

The North American steel industry is facing varied pressures across production, shipments, and trade. In the United States, domestic mill shipments remained nearly flat in August, with 8,220,544 short tons shipped compared to July. However, raw steel production has seen a recent decline, marking two consecutive weeks of lower output according to the American Iron and Steel Institute. Additionally, U.S. steel exports fell 3% in August, reaching a six-month low.

In Canada, Stelco Inc. has announced plans to lay off up to 500 workers at its Ontario facilities. The company cited a 58% plunge in Canadian exports of cold-rolled and coated steel to the United States compared to pre-trade-war levels, alongside increased competition from foreign imports. Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly has stated that the company’s legally binding employment commitments remain in force as the government reviews the situation.
