Steel markets face rising prices amid supply constraints
Global steel markets are experiencing upward price pressure driven by supply constraints and regulatory changes. In Europe, domestic coil prices have seen a slight recovery. This trend is supported by higher production costs and reduced import availability resulting from new quota systems and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Supply is further tightening due to technical issues and production cuts at major mills, including ArcelorMittal in Germany, Arvedi in Italy, and Acciaierie d’Italia following a court ruling.
In the United States, steel production is recovering, and buyers generally expect prices to rise in the near future. Market participants report that demand remains stable to improving, while inventories are moving faster than the previous year due to leaner supply chains. While imports remain attractive for some due to pricing, they are often limited by quotas, long lead times, and quality concerns. Many buyers anticipate continued price increases over the coming months due to tight capacity and ongoing mill maintenance.
