Steel production trends diverge in the U.S. and India

Global steel production trends show divergent paths in the United States and India. In the U.S., raw steel production reached a five-month low during the week ending August 29, 2026, totaling 1,818,000 short tons. This represents a 30,000 short ton decrease from the previous week and a 0.3% dip below the year-to-date weekly average. Despite this weekly decline, year-to-date production remains 5.5% higher than the same period in 2025.

Conversely, India’s steel sector experienced growth between April and July 2026. Crude steel production rose 2.4% to 56.2 million tonnes, while finished steel production increased 4.7% to 54.7 million tonnes compared to the previous year. Finished steel consumption also saw a 7.9% increase, reaching 56.0 million tonnes. While alloy steel production saw significant gains, stainless steel production declined by 4.2% during this period.
